Human Trafficking

What Is It?

Human trafficking, also known as trafficking in persons, is a vile and pervasive criminal industry where traffickers exploit and profit from adults and children through forced labor or commercial sex. Notably, any commercial sex act involving a minor under 18 (19 in Nebraska) is considered a crime, regardless of the presence of force, fraud, or coercion. This modern form of slavery can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or religious background.

Human Trafficking in Nebraska

The need for safe, supportive programs for teen girls in Nebraska is more important than ever. In 2023, the Nebraska Human Trafficking Hotline received 98 calls, resulting in 21 law enforcement responses and 67 additional tips (Nebraska Attorney General’s Office, 2023). Many of these cases involve girls as young as 12 to 14—ages when they should be thinking about school, friends, and the future, not fighting to survive. Traffickers often use manipulation and emotional control, taking advantage of a young person’s trust. That’s why it’s so important to offer care, safety, and long-term support that’s built around what teen survivors really need to heal and thrive.
